How difficult is it to maintain and protect a griddle?

Every equipment, cookware or hardware, or any gadget needs to be maintained a little bit. Proper maintenance increases its life span. And a griddle is not different. It is easy to clean a griddle. You do not have to use soap to clean it, brush it, or dry it. You just have to ensure that its seasoning is done well. The meals are cooked on the non-stick surface of the griddle. What do I need to do to clean the griddle?

When we buy any new gadget or equipment, we get so happy and excited that we wish to use it at once. The minute we reach home, we would like to test it and use it. This holds true in the case of the Blackstone griddle also.

Who wouldn’t be tempted to cook juicy steak on it teamed with some potatoes and eggs immediately? This sounds so tempting right. However, one should not do this.

First, you need to clean the griddle so as to remove any dust or dirt that may have settled on it after it was manufactured and shipped.  To clean the griddle, you will need to mix a little soap in a bucket filled with hot water. Take a towel to scrub the full surface with soap water. This will help remove residue.  After scrubbing, dry the griddle using paper towels. Make sure to dry it thoroughly before using it or storing it. This way, it will not get rusted.

Please note that soap water is to be used only for the first time after you get your new griddle. Once you have cooked on the griddle, do not use soap water to clean it. Avoid it so that the next meal taste doesn’t get hampered.

Make sure to season it after cleaning it. This way, you will help the cooking surface to stay stick-resistant.

How is a griddle seasoned?

Seasoning a griddle means applying oil to its cook top surface. It is not at all time-consuming. You could get the following to season your griddle:

  • Blackstone Cast Iron & Griddle Seasoning Conditioner
  • Flax Oil
  • Canola Oil
  • Shortening
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Olive Oil

Take 2 to 3 tbsp of oil. Using a paper or a dish towel, rub this oil all over the griddle surface. Create a thin oil layer by doing so. Then let the burner heat up. Let the temperature be high for the oil to begin smoking. Once you notice the griddle discoloring, it means that the oil is merging with the metal. This is a good sign, and it will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. After the smoking stops, add another 2 to 3 tbsp of oil and repeat the process until the oil starts smoking.  Again after the oil smoking stops, repeat this a 3rd time. Later let it aside to cool.

Such seasoning for this black beauty is only needed once. The blackened Griddle is stick-resistant. And once you start cooking on the griddle, the surface will automatically get seasoned and get better.

Just make sure to clean the griddle after cooking on it. Rub little oil over the entire surface. And using a paper towel, you can remove any excess oil. Let it cool and dry before you store it.

Is it easy cleaning the griddle after cooking on it?
